Below is a message form that came through the Long Island President's Council to be passed on to all BMUST Members. Forum: General discussion Title: Scholarship opportunity from CBTU Good evening I have attached a scholarship application from the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists. I am currently a member and Selena Durio sits as one of the trustees for this organization which represents NYSUT. Over the past three years all of the scholarships the organization has given out, which every union members child is eligible to apply for, have gone to the children of NYSUT members. I ask that you please forward this application to the members in your local. Despite the name of the organization, the only prerequisite to apply for this scholarship is that at least one parent and be a union member. Thank you for your assistance. In unity, Wayne

The Lawrence Teachers’ Association needs you to walk with them on Wednesday, May 17th from 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm at the Lawrence Middle School (195 Broadway, Lawrence). Help us as we unite and march for a new contract! Lawrence is now working longer than any other local in New York State under an expired contract. After countless negotiation sessions, mediations, and fact-finding it is safe to say that a new contract is nowhere in sight. To illustrate this point, the President of the Board of Education rested the District’s case by stating; “I negotiate contracts, just on my terms”. This uphill battle has left the morale of the L.T.A. at an all-time low. Nonetheless, we will continue to stand together as one united front and serve the Lawrence community. The L.T.A. continues to be the educators our students deserve to have each and every day, in and out of our classrooms. We are a dedicated group of professionals that will continue to maintain the education of our students as our #1 priority. “United We Stand”, in red, at Lawrence Middle School on May 17th at 5:00 pm! In Unity, The Negotiations Team of the LTA Please RSVP to Kim Black [email protected] if you will be able to join the rally. Mark Steinberg President May 6 through 12 is School Nurses’ Recognition Week. Please let the nurse in your building know how much you appreciate the work that she does for our children and us as teachers. The nurses are essential to our schools and often go above and beyond their job description. They are the heart of healthcare for our students and faculty.
To all of our nurses, thank you for all that you do. You are greatly appreciated. We are short volunteers today and tomorrow for the budget phone banks. If you can stop over even for a short time it would be greatly appreciated.
It is very important for all of us to make every effort possible to get the district budget passed. Please see below: The Budget Phone Banks will be held at the NYSUT Nassau Regional Office, 1000 Woodbury Road, Suite 214, Woodbury, NY. Dates: Monday, May 8 and Tuesday, May 9 Time: 3:00 pm - 6:30 pm Pizza will be served. The phone banks will be paperless this year. All participants will be using phones and computers that NYSUT will provide. -- The Nassau and Suffolk regions of NYSUT stand in solidarity with the members of Teamsters Local 812 in their fight against the greed of corporate giant Clare Rose Inc., the official Long Island wholesaler for Budweiser, Heinecken and numerous other beers. (See message below from Long Island Federation of Labor president John Durso.)
Please share this message with your members and request that any who live in the vicinity of Melville or Yaphank make the effort to walk the picket line with the members of Local 812 at the locations shown below. Dear Brothers and Sisters, Please join us as we stand with the members of International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 812 and their families. They have been targeted by the corporate greed of industry giant Clare Rose. They've threatened to permanently replace striking workers. Support our brothers and sisters. Join them on the picket line. Let Clare Rose know that union busting is disgusting and we won't stand for it! "While this company is making millions, they are trying to cut the wages and retirement benefits that [...] families depend on. [They] have bills to pay and mortgages to pay." said, Ed Weber, President of Teamsters Local 812 He's right, it's time to stop the greed! The union has picket lines set up at: 255 Pinelawn Road, Melville, NY 11747 And 100 Rose Executive Boulevard, East Yaphank, NY 11967 Please call the Long Island Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO at 631-348-1170 ext 303 if you have any additional questions. Sincerely, John R. Durso President, Long Island Federation of Labor |
