At the start of the school
year, BMUST introduced its New Member Program in an
effort to help the increasing number of new teachers
excel in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School
District. Through a district wide New Teacher Committee
as well as building level committees, we have developed
a network of assistance for our new teachers. This
program has proven to be very successful and was the
first place winner in the 2001 NYSUT New Member Program
Contest.
An essential part of assisting
our new teachers is our Mentoring Program. Each new
member is paired up with a mentor who is available
to discuss any questions or concerns. This has greatly
improved our lines of communication throughout the
district.
The New Member Program also
focuses on the importance of getting to know its newest
members. We have held various social events in an
effort to help new and experienced members get to
know each other and to encourage everyone to become
involved members. Such events have enabled us to develop
the relationships that have helped BMUST become what
it is today.
Any new member who has a
question or concern should certainly feel free to
seek out their mentor or building New Teacher Committee
Chairperson. The building and district level committee
chairpeople are listed below and can be reached at
their respective buildings or through the union office
at ext. 1068.
