Title: Scholarship opportunity from CBTU
I have attached a scholarship application from the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists. I am currently a member and Selena Durio sits as one of the trustees for this organization which represents NYSUT. Over the past three years all of the scholarships the organization has given out, which every union members child is eligible to apply for, have gone to the children of NYSUT members. I ask that you please forward this application to the members in your local.
Despite the name of the organization, the only prerequisite to apply for this scholarship is that at least one parent and be a union member. Thank you for your assistance.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
The Lawrence Teachers’ Association needs you to walk with them on Wednesday, May 17th from 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm at the Lawrence Middle School (195 Broadway, Lawrence).
Help us as we unite and march for a new contract! Lawrence is now working longer than any other local in New York State under an expired contract. After countless negotiation sessions, mediations, and fact-finding it is safe to say that a new contract is nowhere in sight. To illustrate this point, the President of the Board of Education rested the District’s case by stating; “I negotiate contracts, just on my terms”.
This uphill battle has left the morale of the L.T.A. at an all-time low. Nonetheless, we will continue to stand together as one united front and serve the Lawrence community. The L.T.A. continues to be the educators our students deserve to have each and every day, in and out of our classrooms. We are a dedicated group of professionals that will continue to maintain the education of our students as our #1 priority.
“United We Stand”, in red, at Lawrence Middle School on May 17th at 5:00 pm!
The Negotiations Team of the LTA
Please RSVP to Kim Black email@example.com if you will be able to join the rally.
May 6 through 12 is School Nurses’ Recognition Week. Please let the nurse in your building know how much you appreciate the work that she does for our children and us as teachers. The nurses are essential to our schools and often go above and beyond their job description. They are the heart of healthcare for our students and faculty.
To all of our nurses, thank you for all that you do. You are greatly appreciated.
We are short volunteers today and tomorrow for the budget phone banks. If you can stop over even for a short time it would be greatly appreciated.
It is very important for all of us to make every effort possible to get the district budget passed.
Please see below:
The Budget Phone Banks will be held at the NYSUT Nassau Regional Office, 1000 Woodbury Road, Suite 214, Woodbury, NY.
Dates: Monday, May 8 and Tuesday, May 9
Time: 3:00 pm - 6:30 pm
Pizza will be served.
The phone banks will be paperless this year. All participants will be using phones and computers that NYSUT will provide.
The Nassau and Suffolk regions of NYSUT stand in solidarity with the members of Teamsters Local 812 in their fight against the greed of corporate giant Clare Rose Inc., the official Long Island wholesaler for Budweiser, Heinecken and numerous other beers. (See message below from Long Island Federation of Labor president John Durso.)
Please share this message with your members and request that any who live in the vicinity of Melville or Yaphank make the effort to walk the picket line with the members of Local 812 at the locations shown below.
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Please join us as we stand with the members of International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 812 and their families. They have been targeted by the corporate greed of industry giant Clare Rose.
They've threatened to permanently replace striking workers. Support our brothers and sisters. Join them on the picket line. Let Clare Rose know that union busting is disgusting and we won't stand for it!
"While this company is making millions, they are trying to cut the wages and retirement benefits that [...] families depend on. [They] have bills to pay and mortgages to pay." said, Ed Weber, President of Teamsters Local 812
He's right, it's time to stop the greed!
The union has picket lines set up at:
255 Pinelawn Road, Melville, NY 11747
100 Rose Executive Boulevard, East Yaphank, NY 11967
Please call the Long Island Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO at 631-348-1170 ext 303 if you have any additional questions.
John R. Durso
President, Long Island Federation of Labor

Hello BMUST,Earlier this year my mother died of an ALS like disease called Bulbar Palsy in October. She loved to run, and last year completed the 10k as part of the LI Marathon. She had held off putting in a feeding tube just so she could run in the race. Although she fell after six miles, she got back up and with some assistance was able to complete the race. My family has been organizing a fund raiser in her honor. This year my family will be running various races in her honor during the LI marathon of races weekend. If you would like to, I have placed a link below.
I have also placed a link of a video my brother created with music she liked, family pictures and of her crossing the finish line last year in her last race. It is a promotional five minutes video as to why we are doing this if you want to check it out.
http://tinyurl.com/CarolMoellerVideoRight now we are the top fund raiser for ALS NY. We even were the lead story in the ALS newsletter which I copied below.
"Team We Are Carol Moeller" Takes on the 2017
Long Island Marathon to Help Fight ALS
In an amazing demonstration of strength and courage, three months after her ALS diagnosis Carol Moeller finished her final 10k race at the 2016 Long Island Marathon.
“She couldn’t speak, was having trouble walking, couldn’t swallow, and she delayed her feeding tube operation so she could compete in the 10k race. She did it and she didn’t give up. She was a week away from having a feeding tube inserted into her body, but still pushed herself into completing a 10k,” Carol’s son, Kevin Moeller said.
Carol’s other son Dennis Moeller added, “Mom was in the middle and we surrounded her like secret service. She fell twice during the race. A mile before the finish line, we helped her up and my brother and I each had an arm around her. We told her to slow down and she just moaned the word, RUN! She finished the race and it was really special.”
This year the Moeller family will be running the Long Island Marathon, on May 7th, in honor of their mother Carol who passed away last October.
“I know it would make her feel good that I’ve been training the way she always did. We owe it to her. We saw her run with very limited abilities and I said if my mom can run 6 miles while already losing her ability to smile, stand up straight, or to cry, there is no way I can’t run the 26 miles. There is no quit in any of us,” Dennis said.Running was always a part of Carol’s life, so the tribute is more than fitting.
“She would wake up at 4:30 in the morning and run 6 to 10 miles, 6 days a week, and be home in time to make breakfast, get us to school, and go to work. That was her routine for 30 years,” Dennis said. “Running is the only way to honor her, in the way she truly deserves.”
The Moeller family is hoping this run will bring with it support, because their goal now is to raise awareness, and bring in funds for research. So far “Team We Are Carol Moeller” is closing in on its $20,000 dollar initial goal.
“My mom kept asking for something to help her, some magic pill that would take this all away. And you know, hopefully through these efforts we are going to help someone, somewhere, come up with that magic pill.” Kevin said.
But until that day the Moeller family says they will continue to run for ALS and continue to fight for a cure. Dennis said when he needs motivation to keep on going he just hears the words his son told him during one of his training sessions, “Daddy, I think Grandma is cheering for you from the sky.”

I am outraged by your decision to bring Betsy DeVos-style charter proposals to New York, as laid out in the Senate one-house budget.
Your plan to unfreeze charter tuitions and give charters more money for staff and building aid will drain $350 million from New York's public schools and will send that money to corporate charter bank accounts.
That's money that otherwise would go to our neighborhood/ district public schools.
This drain on public schools will only get worse because you want to eliminate the current charter cap, creating an unlimited number of unregulated charter schools.
You cannot let this happen. Protect the public schools in your district. Do not be the one to bring Betsy DeVos' failed education agenda to New York.

Stop the DeVostation to New York School Districts
This chart shows how much 20 selected school districts – and your students -- would lose if Senate Republicans are successful. The Senate GOP wants to unfreeze charter tuition payments; require your local school districts to double-pay by absorbing the cost of charter school support staff; and provide new statewide building aid. This new giveaway to charters would come at the expense of the state's needed investment in Foundation Aid, which is used to benefit all school districts and help the vast majority of students who attend neighborhood public schools.
