An Urgent Appeal on Behalf of the Faculty of LIU-Brooklyn

9/8/2016

On Labor Day weekend, the full time and adjunct faculty at the Brooklyn campus of Long Island University were informed, with less than a day’s notice, that they were locked out of their campus. They are no longer being paid and their health insurance has been cut off.

The faculty at LIU and their families depend on their paychecks and health insurance. Please help them in their time of need by clicking here to donate to the Long Island University Faculty Federation solidarity fund.

The lockout is an employer’s strike—it’s a contemptible way to bully workers. As far as we know, this is the first time in American history that an institution of higher education has locked out its faculty! But if LIU gets away with this lockout you can be sure it won’t be the last. The LIU lockout has also deprived its students of the quality education they deserve – and pay for! – by redeploying unqualified administrators and replacement workers to teach classes. The LIU students, by the way, are standing in solidarity with the faculty and conducted a mass walkout on Thursday.

Our brothers and sisters need your help. The faculty’s ability to continue to stand strong against the administration depends on their being able to weather this lockout financially. Click here to donate to the LIU Faculty Federation solidarity fund today.

Adding insult to injury, the LIU administration chose Labor Day weekend, when Americans reflect on the importance of the labor movement, to lock out its own faculty—and disrupt the education of the 8,170 students on its Brooklyn campus.

We will continue to fight until LIU’s administration restores our members’ pay and benefits and returns to the bargaining table to settle a fair contract.

In the meantime, show your solidarity with your New York State United Teachers/American Federation of Teachers brothers and sisters and their families by clicking here to donate to the LIU Faculty Federation solidarity fund today.
Contributions can be made by individual members and by locals. Please circulate this message to your members and strongly encourage them to give whatever they can afford IMMEDIATELY. Time is of the essence if the members of the LIUFF are to prevail in this struggle.
